Seasons of Smyth County Photo Books

The Seasons of Smyth County Photography Book evolved from a project of the Chamber’s Special Events, Tourism, and Community Action Committee. The committee was interested in designing a project that would involve the citizens and promote the beauty of Smyth County. They began discussing the idea of a photography contest in early 2009, and developed a plan to start taking submissions the next year. The Seasons of Smyth County Photography Contest ran from January through December of 2010 with photographs being submitted seasonally. Photos were submitted between January and March for the Winter contest, April through June for Spring, July through September for Summer, and October through December for Autumn. Entrants were allowed to submit multiple photographs and as digital or printed copies. The categories were open, with the season being the only theme, to allow the photographers to be creative with their submissions. Each season, after the entries were cataloged, the Chamber office arranged for judging by a panel of photographers with professional experience. The judges rated each photograph in the categories of Composition, Creativity, Technical Quality, and Overall Impact. Their scores were combined to select the winners. The top three winning photographs from each season were eligible for the Overall Contest. The Overall Winner was selected by a separate, final judging that resulted in very close scores. The Chamber of Commerce of Smyth County is pleased with the results of this project and proud to present this book as a product of the people of Smyth County.
