Marion
Government
The Town of Marion has a Council/Manager form of government.
There are seven Council members and a mayor, all
elected at large from
open Town elections. Council members are elected for four year,
staggered terms.
Council meets on the first and third Monday
of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 138 West
Main Street. If a regular meeting falls on a scheduled holiday
then a date for that meeting will be set by the Town Council at
the meeting prior to the holiday, and the rescheduled meeting
date will be advertised in the Smyth County News.
The Town Council members are assigned to various committees.

Anyone wishing to address Council on any issue can arrange to
be on the Council Agenda by contacting the Town Clerk or Town
Manager at (276) 783-4113.
Town of Saltville
Government
Saltville’s Town Council Meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month.
Meetings start at 7:00 pm and are conducted at the Saltville
Town Hall.
The public is welcome to attend and can make brief comments to
the council during citizen’s time. To be added to the agenda,
contact the Clerk-Treasurer (276–496–5342 (ext 25)) no later
than the Thursday preceding each meeting. Agendas are available
through the links below, but not earlier than the Friday
preceding each meeting. Minutes are available once they are
approved at the following meeting.

Town of
Chilhowie Government
The Town of Chilhowie is
governed by a town council, composed of six members, elected
at large. Every two years three members of the council are
elected to a four-year term. Any person qualified to vote in
town elections shall be eligible for the office of council.
In each
even numbered year, a mayor of the Town of Chilhowie is elected
for a term of two years. Any person qualified to vote in town
elections shall be eligible for the office
of the mayor.
The mayor
serves as the president of the council, but does not vote
except in case of a tie. He is recognized as head of the town
government for ceremonial purposes and by the Governor for
purposes of military law. He performs such other duties as may
be assigned to him by council not inconsistent with the
Constitution of Virginia, the general laws of the Commonwealth
of Virginia or the Charter of the Town of Chilhowie, Virginia.
The town
council at its first regular meeting in July following a
general election shall elect from its members a vice-mayor, who
exercises all the powers and duties of the mayor in the event
of the absence of the mayor.
Council
can appoint a town manager who serves as the chief
administrative officer of the town. Council may also appoint a
town attorney, town clerk, town treasurer, chief of police and
such other town officers as it deems appropriate.
